Instructional Focus

We have a strong focus on Literacy at John D. Bracco School with 15 minutes each day committed to Silent Reading. We know that the more students read, the better their writing becomes, and we are targeting skills needed to be successful on the Provincial Achievement Tests that all students write at the end of their Grade 9 year.

We have provided incentives for students to become active readers and this year, we have a monthly incentive program to reward students for their commitment to becoming better readers.

In  November and December, students read their personal book selection, and wrote book reviews to enter into our contest for tickets to the West Edmonton Mall Waterpark. We gave out 40 tickets to the West Edmonton Mall Waterpark in our December Book Review Draw and the recipients had a fabulous time in reward for reading and writing. Congratulations to those students whose names were drawn!

In January we have been running a "Caught You Reading" Contest wherein students will be given a "Caught you Reading" Ballot to fill out and enter into the draw for the Hockey Hookey Field Trip to see the Oil Kings play on January 28th, 2014. We encourage our students to carry a reading book with them at all times.

Our next contest will be for tickets to the West Edmonton Mall Galaxyland Amusement Park. We will keep students posted on the ways to win next month.
